Put into bat, they slipped to 29-3 before David Houghton (21) put on 61 with Essex staffer Paul Walter.

Lee Knight fell cheaply to leave the home side 92-5, but tall left-hander Walter added another 66 with Ross Poulton and hit 11 fours in his 71 from 75 balls.

Andy Smith added a six and four fours in his quickfire 35, in a 92-run partnership with Poulton, who was eventually dismissed for 104, having hit a six and 13 fours in his 99-ball innings.

Billericay closed on 278-8 and then saw Walter and Adam Marchant claim an early wicket apiece to reduce the visitors to 42-2.

Poulton (2-41) got in on the act to make it 96-4, before Southend skipper Joe Robbins rallied and hit four sixes and six fours in his 68 from 74 balls.

Robbins was dismissed by Darren Ironside (3-24) with the total on 150 and Southend collapsed to 173 all out, as Robert Rayner (3-23) helped to mop up the tail.
