Among the doom and gloom predicted to hit the UK if it crashes out of the European Union there was some positivity in the Brexit secretary’s announcement.

We will still be able to eat a BLT sandwich after Brexit.

In one of the most comprehensive (and bizarre) statements from his speech ahead of the release of “no deal” papers Dominic Raab said: “Let me assure you that, contrary to one of the wilder claims, you will still be able to enjoy a BLT after #Brexit, and there are no plans to deploy the army to maintain food supplies.”

The declaration was ridiculed on social media from those expecting a few more words of reassurance than the future of lunch.

The Lib Dems press office tweeted: “Raab saying that we might still be able to have a BLT sandwich after Brexit suggests a slight lowering of expectations from the Brexiters who are making a mess out of our future...”

Others on Twitter were quick to point out that a no-deal Brexit would still make a BLT much more expensive.

Anita Baker tweeted: “The real question is not ‘will we be able to enjoy a BLT’ but instead ‘WHO will be able to afford a BLT?’ Use ‘BLT’ for just about any product, food or not, after a no deal Brexit.”

The internet also had questions about other types of sandwiches and baguettes, with those questioning what it would mean for those with dietary requirements.

“Thanks but I’m a vegetarian”, said one.
