Commons speaker John Bercow has apologised after a slip of the tongue saw him dub a pro-Remain Labour MP the "member for Brexeter".

Mr Bercow's blunder came in relation to Exeter MP Ben Bradshaw, as the speaker answered a series of points of order from MPs over Brexit.

Having responded to five points of order, on comments by Brexit secretary David Davis, Mr Bercow said: "If there are no further points of order, 'no, no more' says the right honourable gentleman, the member for Brexeter ... Exeter."

The House erupted into laughter at the mistake, as staunchly pro-EU Mr Bradshaw jokingly remonstrated with the speaker from his seat.

Mr Bercow said: "I'm very sorry for my discourtesy to the right honourable gentleman. He is the last person that I could call a Brexiteer.

"He is from Exeter, but he is not from Brexeter. If there were such a place, he would not wish to live there, I realise that."

One MP could be heard saying "he wouldn't get elected", while Tory Brexit rebel Anna Soubry could also be seen shaking her head.

"The right honourable lady for Broxtowe chunters from a sedentary position that she wouldn't want to live in a place called Brexeter either," said Mr Bercow.

"I am well aware of that."

In Exeter, 55% voted to remain, by 35,270 votes to 28,533.
