Nigel Farage floundered under tough questioning in one of his first interviews since rejoining the political fray.
Farage was on ITV’s Good Morning Britain as one of his first television appearances since he declared he was returning to the Brexit campaign trail with relaunched group ‘Leave Means Leave’.
The interview began with him being forced to deny he was in it for his own gain.
“I’ve got no political aspirations”, he insisted, despite being an MEP, running for Parliament seven times, and serving as UKIP leader three times.
While he wanted to use the platform to criticise Theresa May’s Chequers deal and to explain why he was going to be taking a campaigning role against the plans, presenter Kate Garraway wanted to grill the politician on what was meant by “Brexit means Brexit”.
Garraway explained: “There still doesn’t seem an obvious solution for many of the things people got excited about – like the £350m going back to the NHS”.
She added: “You might not have said it but you didn’t deny it – and people believed that.”
Farage continued to bark back with more rhetoric. “What about being free?” he asked.
“Wait, you’ve got to answer a question,” Garraway insisted, adding “the detail does count!”
Attempting to divert attention from the line of questioning, he responded: “Don’t trivialise this!”
Visibly frustrated by his rhetoric, Garraway once more asked: “You’re going to whip people up but have you got any answers to the solution?”
Again avoiding the question, he continued: “I am going to try and get the people to let their Members of Parliament know they will not accept being betrayed”.
Garraway appeared unconvinced.
“That’s a banner to go to war with – when you get the detail of creating a peace treaty that’s the tricky thing”.
During the weekend Farage was hit with another fiery Brexit exchange from a doctor who pulled apart one of his latest tweets. The responses - along with a request to debate the facts on his LBC show - were met with silence.
