A series of new stamps marking the 50th anniversary of Dad’s Army have been mocked by Twitter users comparing them to Brexit.

The stamps were launched by Royal Mail on the day that British MPs voted to reject the Lords’ amendments on the EU (Withdrawal) Bill in the House of Commons.

Each stamp features a character from the 1960s and 1970s BBC comedy series alongside their well-known catchphrases from the show.

Catchphrases include “don’t panic!” and “we’re doomed!” – sayings which could equally be applied to the process of Britain leaving the EU.

One Twitter user suggested Royal Mail were trolling the Brexiteers. “These new Dad’s Army stamps, following in the wake of the failed campaign for a Brexit stamp, feels like some top notch trolling by the Royal Mail.”

The release of these stamps follow calls for Royal Mail to issue a series of stamps to commemorate Brexit – a campaign which has been backed by Boris Johnson and The Sun.

Last month the Treasury appeared to support calls for a commemorative Brexit coin.

In a statement a Royal Mail denied the suggestions of a Brexit link. A spokesman said: “The stamps have been issued solely to mark the 50 anniversary of Dad’s Army.”
