The leader of a grassroots pan-European political party is to stand in the EU elections as a candidate for London.

Andrea Venzon, is set to compete as the party's eighth candidate Europe-wide.

Brexit was the trigger that prompted Venzon to found Volt, he explained.

“Pro-Europeans are suffering in the UK, and we have one message for them: we are one people, and we stand by each other,” he said.

”Volt is the best choice for British people to retain their voice in Europe.

“And we will keep on fighting till the end to bring the UK back into the EU.”

With over 25,000 suppporters across Europe, Volt has adopted a grassroots participatory structure in which citizens can propose and amend policies that could be tabled by the party in the European Parliament - even if we leave the EU.

“In other words, citizens of the UK will still be able to influence EU politics through Volt,” said a spokesperson.

For the elections the party stands on its central programme outlined in its Amsterdam declaration, whose statements are broadly pro-EU and socially progressive, but call for greater transparency and a stronger connection between EU citizens and their representatives.

Volt's chapters in the EU have proposed candidates in Belgium, Bulgaria, Germany, Luxembourg, Spain, Sweden and the

Netherlands.
