Allegra Stratton steps into a new role

Some are seeing this as a demotion, but anything is a step up after working for Johnson

It’s taken Allegra Stratton almost a year to land a new role after she became the only senior Boris Johnson aide honest enough to resign over Partygate, when a video of her joking about the illegal gatherings was leaked. The advisory committee on business appointments has just green-lighted her new job as a contributing editor with Bloomberg News, where she will write an afternoon newsletter called Readout.

The watchdog has warned Johnson’s former press secretary of the need for “propriety” in her new job, signalling that otherwise her No.10 experience might unfairly help her new employer.

Some are seeing the new job as a big comedown for Stratton, once the political editor of Newsnight and later ITN’s national editor, but anything is a step up on working for Johnson.
