Boris Johnson doesn’t care about Northern Ireland… only himself

The ex-PM’s Protocol intervention once again shows that it’s all about him

Which part of the UK has seen its exports to the EU boom by an amazing 55% in 2022, and also seen imports rise by a wonderful 30%? Which part of the UK, has the second highest level of foreign direct investment after London and, over the last three years, which part of the country has seen output grow four times faster than the rest of the UK?

The answer is, of course, Northern Ireland.

Poor suffering NI, struggling under the shackles of Brussels! Desperate NI, still a member of the single market for goods! Sad NI, burdened with a completely open border with one of the fastest-growing countries in the EU!

But fear not, there is a plan to make things even better and free Northern Ireland from almost all the red tape that Boris Johnson placed on its trade between itself and the rest of the UK. It will also end the long-running dispute with the EU over the Tory government’s foot-dragging and failure to introduce what it agreed to, remove the threat of the UK deliberately breaking international law and therefore improve relations with Brussels. It will have the bonus of getting the UK back into the vitally important Horizon scheme and improving its dire relationship with the rest of Europe.

Thank heavens, therefore, that there is someone brave enough to stand up to this disastrous plan.

Step forward one B. Johnson (ibid), negotiator of the “oven-ready” deal which is apparently now so bad it must be destroyed root and branch. Who, if called upon to serve, will once again reluctantly return to No. 10 to lead his country, rally the betrayed backers of Brexit to his flag, and fight and fight again to make an even worse mess of the dog’s dinner he devised.

I was beginning to think that Johnson might be reconciling himself to spending more time with his money, but it seems the ego of the man who would be King (of the world) knows no bounds, and nor does the damage that he is willing to do to get back into power.

The fact that the people of Northern Ireland rejected Brexit at the polls, support the Protocol and know that destroying the Protocol will deepen the schism in their province to a dangerous degree, matters not a jot.

Block this deal, and Rishi Sunak may fall, Johnson return, the threat to tear up the NI Protocol continue and quite possibly becomes reality. At which point EU trade for the whole of the UK will get harder, rules and checks will get tougher, the EC will start the long process towards tariffs on UK goods and services; talks on Horizon, equivalence and mutual recognition of qualifications and data standards die.

The swivel-eyed loons of his party love Boris Johnson and are increasingly desperate, as they see Brexit slipping away from them.

We know they don’t care about NI, but they also don’t care that their policies will damage the UK even more.

In the case of Mr Johnson, it is just a price he is willing others to pay in order to further massage ego.
