Amber Rudd has slammed Boris Johnson over his newspaper column that savaged the prime minister’s Chequers plan.

Speaking on the BBC’s new Politics Live programme the former home secretary said that Boris’ ‘fervent but short-term approach to Brexit’ is neither a strategy or a plan.

She explained: ‘I think it’s ridiculous. Boris and I were colleagues for two years in cabinet. I felt he was working hard to get the compromise that the prime minister eventually agreed that was the Chequers deal.

‘I don’t think it’s helpful all this fervent but short-term approach to Brexit that just has two or three words to try and sum up a strategy. It isn’t a strategy, it isn’t a plan. Once again it’s a case of leap before you look. There’s no proposal here.’

Asked about her comments during the EU referendum campaign when she claimed that you ‘can’t trust him to take you home at the end of an evening’ she said that her position on Johnson had not changed.

‘I don’t think I’ve changed my position very much. It is very consistent.’

Rudd also hit out at suggestions Boris Johnson was bidding to become Tory party leader.

‘If it is about leadership he is wrong. It is an incredibly difficult time in parliament, and the prime minister is the right person to do it.

‘There have been a lot of noises off about leadership bids but no has come forward and I think that is because nobody has a proposal that is workable.’

Rudd added that Johnson’s proposals for Brexit had ‘even smaller amounts of support’ than with the Chequers plan.
