The BBC has had to apologise after picking up the reaction of a man claiming Labour was ‘fucked’ during a live broadcast of seven MPs resigning.

During the press conference – which aired on the Victoria Derbyshire programme on BBC Two and BBC News – seven MPs including Chris Leslie, Luciana Berger and Chuka Umunna announced their resignations.

One unknown man in the audience was overheard on the BBC’s microphone telling another audience member: ‘Not going to lie, between this and Brexit we’re actually fucked.

‘It’s going to be really divided, it’s still going to be divided, the Conservatives are going to win.’

Some speculated the audience member could have been a Labour staffer, others argued it was a journalist for a left-wing publication. The person responsible for the comment has not been revealed. BBC presenter Samira Ahmed – who was covering the programme apologised afterwards for the bad language.

‘I should say for those who were listening to that live news conference, there was some bad language apparently, so we do apologise if anyone was offended by what they might have heard.’

A spokeswoman for the corporation said: ‘Due to an error, we inadvertently broadcast some background comments from another microphone during our coverage of the press conference this morning.

‘We apologised on-air once we realised our mistake.’
