Caroline Lucas has accused the prime minister of chasing ‘heated up fantasies’ in her latest pitch to the House of Commons.

The Green Party MP made the intervention as Theresa May outlined the government position on her Plan B for Brexit.

Lucas told the Commons: ‘Does she recognise that there is no solution in chasing up fantasies? The EU has ruled this kind of option out many times, and you cannot have an insurance policy that is based on a tecnology that does not exist.

Will she not recognise that is what is chasing up here are heated up fantasies that have already been rejected by the EU and they depend on technologies that don’t exist?’

May was typically dismissive of Lucas’ scathing attack on her Plan B.

She said: ‘There are members across this house who have put forward a number of proposals as to how this issue can be addressed.

‘They are not indulging in fantasies. They are coming forward with serious proposals which this government will work with them on.’

She said that the essence of any negotiation is to find a mutually acceptable solution and she does not agree with those MPs who believe there is no point trying.

‘But in these negotiations the EU has on many occasions made concessions it originally resisted,’ she said.
