After a poor showing for Labour in the EU elections, Jeremy Corbyn has said that the issue of Brexit needs to be decided by the people – either in a general election or in a People’s Vote.

“With the Conservatives disintegrating and unable to govern, and parliament deadlocked, this issue will have to go back to the people, whether through a general election or a public vote,” he said.

“Over the coming days we will have conversations across our party and movement, and reflect on these results on both sides of the Brexit divide,” he added.

While the Conservatives have been almost completely obliterated in the EU elections, Labour have also had a tough night.

With two more regions to declare at time of writing, Labour has lost 10 seats.

Emboldened by his party’s overwhelming success in the EU elections, Nigel Farage said he was now keen to move towards domestic politics.

At his acceptance of an MEP seat for South East England, he said: “If we don’t leave on October 31 then the scores you have seen for the Brexit Party today will be repeated in a general election, and we are getting ready for it.”
