Letters: It’s time Brextremists are called out for their views

Many years ago, I was among environmentalist campaigners who were labelled ‘terrorists’ in the press.

We did not deserve this because we were seeking not to damage the country but to save the world, based on scientifically-agreed, evidence-based, truths. Our crime was to protest against new coal-fired power stations.

But now it is my turn to call others terrorists.

They seek to do harm to this country, even by their own evidence.

They do this from an ideological position that ignores, or denies, the actual facts.

Their belief system seems to get more extreme by the day, as if they are pushing each other into a more fundamental stance.

Surely this is the form of extremism we see in other terror organisations which are rightly outlawed and fought against.

Professor Grayling is right about the need for changes to our electoral system in his article headlined ‘Once we’ve stopped Brexit, the real work starts’.

But more is needed, and even more urgently: We need to be more aware of the people who feel ‘left behind’ while some of us are cheerfully and perhaps insensitively international in our outlook and lifestyle.

Somebody needs the guts to further revise Universal Credit and aspects of ‘austerity’ and set out a credible and acceptable future for us all in a fairer and more united United Kingdom, remaining, we hope, in a reforming EU.

I am all for a changed voting system and belong keenly to the Electoral Reform Society, but that will take time. More equality is needed now.

Just remaining in Europe is not enough on its own.
