Nigel Farage will not give up his £73,000 European Union pension despite demanding Britain should not pay billions for a divorce bill.

The UKIP MEP, who has sat in the European Parliament since 1999, is set to pocket £73,000 in pension payments every year in 10 years once he reaches the age of 63.

Negotiators have guaranteed meeting the pensions for British EU staff but discussions over other payments have stalled. The pension bill could be as much as £9bn.

Asked whether he would forgo the payemnts on The Andrew Marr Show Farage said ‘no’ adding: ‘Why should my family and others suffer even more?’

Liberal Democrat Brexit spokesman Tom Brake said: ‘Nigel Farage is a shameless hypocrite. He rails against the so-called EU gravy train, but is happy to cash in when it suits him.

‘No doubt he also secretly backs the £50bn Brexit divorce bill that includes money to pay for his EU pension.’
