The former minister who is leading the attack on Theresa May’s Chequers plan has hit out at Jean-Claude Juncker for ‘mocking’ the PM.

Hypocrite Steve Baker rushed to May’s protection after the president of the European Commission apparently poked fun at the PM’s dancing by imitating her conference routine.

And yet he has spent much of his time since quitting as a Brexit minister making May’s life a misery by constantly attacking her Chequers plan and rallying colleagues to vote it down.

He told BBC’s Politics Live: ‘It looks like he was mocking her … it is unfortunate because it comes hard on the heels of Donald Tusk and the cherries on the cake and then Donald Tusk saying we all need to be respectful so it is rather unfortunate.

‘Jokes are OK … I do think it is important to be lighthearted but in such serious circumstances I do think being seen to mock a prime minister is not where we should be.’

Asked what message he would have for Juncker he replied: ‘We want to comply with Lisbon Treaty article eight and live in an area of friendship and prosperity and that means we should conclude a deal and let’s just work towards that.’
