Commentator reminds Jeremy Vine Brexit ‘won’t get done’ even with a deal on December 31

A commentator has pointed out that Brexit “won’t get done” even if a deal is achieved by December 31.

Author Jemma Forte said she believed Boris Johnson would likely achieve some sort of agreement with the European Union, which he would champion as a victory for Britain.

But she warned the detail would be “paper-thin” and will not bring a conclusion to the issue.

She told Jeremy Vine on 5: “My hopes died four or five years ago.

“I think there will be a deal, I think to not have a deal would be a complete dereliction of duty.

“We were promised one, I think the deal will be paper-thin and I think there will be little concessions on both sides.

“I think at that point Boris Johnson will declare himself victorious and come out doing the V-sign.

“There will be a lot of jingoistic language in all the papers, victory and all of that.”

Forte argued that even with a deal the “cracks will start to show”, particularly as Brexiteers will not be satisfied.

“Then I suspect that a bit further down the line, sadly as much as we would all like this thing to be done and put away, it absolutely won’t be”.

“I think what the deal actually means will start to come to light.

“I think there will be a section of the Tory party for whom it will never be good enough.

“You will have Nigel Farage back into the studios talking about how it is not a true Brexit.”
