Staying silent in the face of ‘lies’ of the Brexit referendum is one of the biggest regrets of Jean-Claude Juncker’s European Commission presidency.

At a press conference, the outgoing president said the EU “would have been the only ones to destroy the lies which were circulated”.

But during the 2016 EU referendum campaigns, he said, David Cameron had requested that he keep out of it.

Now, responding to a question from a Greek broadcaster, he said it was a mistake “to listen too carefully to the British government – to Cameron”.

“It was a mistake not to intervene and not to interfere,” he told the gathered reporters.

“I was wrong to be silent at an important moment.”
