Labour Leave MP Kate Hoey has claimed that the reason so many young people are anti-Brexit is because they have been ‘indoctrinated’ by their university lecturers.
The Labour Leave MP made the claim at a party conference fringe event as the Brexiteer tried to explain why so many young people were anti-Brexit.
According to YouGov, approximately 75% of 18 to 24 year olds voted for the UK to Remain in the European Union.
Hoey’s claims about university lecturers ‘indoctrinating’ students with pro-EU propaganda echoes headlines from the Daily Mail last year in which it invited people to report any academics that showed bias against Brexit.
Their campaign followed a letter from the then Conservative whip Chris Heaton-Harris sent to universities asking the institutions for the names of professors lecturing on Brexit and details of their courses. Lecturers hit back by accusing the MP of instigating modern-day McCarthyism.
Hoey also claimed at the fringe event that those in parliament attempting to fight Brexit were doing so to target Jeremy Corbyn.
She said: ‘I’m afraid to say that the people in parliament now on (the) Labour side, who are most against Brexit and are doing their upmost to stop it, are actually people who are using it also as an excuse to get at Jeremy. That is the reality… they are anti-Jeremy. And they see this as a way of getting at Jeremy Corbyn.’
