Meet the Brexiteers’ favourite drink (just don’t tell them it’s from Austria)

STEVE ANGLESEY introduces the drink Leavers will cheer… until they read the bottle

Not to everyone’s taste, but intoxicating to some and the cause of many headaches and much regret later on. It seems like whiskey and Brexit were made for each other.

So thirsty Leavers will no doubt be cheering the arrival of Brexit Whiskey… until they read the bottle, that is.

The 43.3 abv drink is made by Austrian firm Golles Distillery, tastes very different to a traditional Scottish single malt and its label reads ‘We say ‘yes’ to our separation from traditional British single malt. Brexit Whiskey reflects a mash of Austrian diversity: corn, rye, barley, wheat and spelt cultivated on our own fields, perfectly harmonised. Carefully fermented, gently distilled and stored for ages in oak barrels. Full-bodied and aromatic – a vote bringing pleasure to everyone.’

Rated ‘earthy, almost grounded… delightfully complex’ by blogger Whiskey Nut, one of the reasons Brexit Whiskey is so highly rated is that it contains spirits matured in a variety of casks for four to 13 years.

A reminder then that one of the USA’s red lines for a post-Brexit trade deal with the UK is removing the EU regulation which says any drink calling itself whiskey must be matured for at least three years. Cheers and cheap American rotgut all round!
