New research finds Brexit will add an extra £113.50 to winter holidays

A quadruple whammy of rising flight costs, hotel prices, insurance prices and mobile roaming charges after Brexit will see the cost of winter holidays rocket.

New research has found that the average cost of Brits’ winter holidays will increase by up to £113.50 under the government’s proposed Brexit plan.

Trips that would become more expensive include skiing holidays to the Swiss, French, or Austrian Alps, visits to Christmas markets in Germany or winter sun holidays in Tenerife.

The reasons for the increase in prices are loss of single market membership, a fall in the value of sterling, loss of entitlement to free health care across the EU, and the return of roaming charges for mobile phone use abroad.

Thousands of British tourists fly on holiday to these destinations every year, and will be disappointed to be hit in the pocket on future trips because of the government’s Brexit deal.

Ian Murray MP from the People’s Vote campaign, which commissioned the research, said: ‘No-one voted to make their holidays more expensive, so this Brexit ‘bump’ will be less welcome than a lump of coal in your stocking for Brits, who now face shelling out more than £100 extra for their winter holidays.

‘Whether it’s a family skiing holiday, a trip to a Christmas market in Germany or a bit of winter sun, Brexit will make it more expensive and more bureaucratic, with lots more paperwork and lots more costs.

‘Brexiters promised their deal would deliver the ‘exact same benefits’ as we enjoy now as EU members, but clearly that promise is being broken. That’s why the final decision should now be handed back to the people through a People’s Vote – because only they can sort this out.’
