‘It’s one rule for you lot!’ – Brexiteer criticised for hypocrisy over second votes

Nigel Evans, a Tory Brexiteer, was explaining how a fresh vote on Theresa May’s leadership could take place just months after a vote of no confidence took place in December.

But Sky News presenter Kay Burley could not help but point out the hypocrisy in not wanting a second vote on Brexit but pushing for MPs to have more votes on Theresa May’s leadership.

‘So MPs should have a second vote, but the people shouldn’t, is that what you are saying?’

But the Brexiteer claimed that the two events could not be compared, claiming the rules of the 1922 committee were not the same.

Burley snapped back: ‘Yes or no is fine.’

‘It cannot be compared’ the Brexiteer responded, before Burley remarked that ‘of course it can!’

In a damning criticism of the Brexiteer MPs, she continued: ‘Why can it not? So it’s one rule for MPs and a different rule for the British public, is that what you’re saying?’ continued the presenter.

Evans shot back: ‘No, it cannot be prepared to a referendum.

‘No Kay, because David Cameron spent 9 million pounds on sending a leaflet to every household.

‘To say whatever you decide we will deliver, that is completely different.’

‘I believe democracy in this country needs to be defended, and we need to do that by ensuring we deliver Brexit.

‘What we’re looking at is the process by which we deliver the Brexit that people voted for, and in my opinion I believe in a change at Number 10. And it may well be, Kay, that we don’t go to a vote of confidence in the prime minister but she see herself sees that her deal is not something she can get through the House of Commons and that the best approach to deliver the Brexit that the people did vote for in 2016 is a change at Number 10.’

An unimpressed Burley continued to challenge the MP on the issue.

‘But if she doesn’t, then you’re suggesting that there could potentially be a second vote in her remaining as prime minister, even though she won that vote last December, so she should stay in office if she wants to until at least December.

‘But MPs might vote differently, but members of the public can’t vote a second time on what happens next as far as Brexit is concerned.

‘One rule for you lot, one rule for us, that can’t be right!’

The Brexiteer insisted he was not being hypocritical.

He said: ‘I don’t compare a referendum of 35 million people where the British people were told that whatever you vote on we will deliver with what we are doing in within the Conservative party.

‘Remember we have had four date changes to Brexit and now are embarking on fighting European elections.’
