Non-league football club demands MPs reject Theresa May’s Brexit deal

A fifth-tier football club has made a bizarre public demand for MPs to vote against Theresa May’s Brexit deal tonight and prepare for a no-deal exit.

Boreham Wood, who are currently sitting 13th in the National League, have printed a rambling 1,456-word article on the club’s official website attacking ‘this ridiculous piece of European bias legislation’ and urging MPs to ‘vote it down in huge, huge numbers’.

Under the headline ‘MP’S [sic] DO YOUR DUTY’ the unsigned opinion piece encourages parliamentarians to work ‘night and day on a new Brexit deal’ or be prepared to leave without one and trade with the bloc on WTO terms.

It says that ‘we believe, as Mrs May to her credit does, that Brexit must mean Brexit and we remind the intellectuals out there, that doesn’t make us all stupid, nationalistic, fascist, ignorant, business stupid, or all of those things’.

It adds: ‘Because history has shown us time and again, that we are an amazing Union when we unite and when we are bullied, and we believe that the people of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are ready to show that unity again.

‘So we implore our MP’s [sic], please do your job today – please vote down this deal, vote down this ridiculous piece of European bias legislation, that the non-elected EU eurocrats have dangled in front of you and please stop scaremongering us all about a NO DEAL.

‘You must vote this deal down and vote it down in huge, huge numbers.’

It then calls on Parliament to forge a new deal with the EU, but adds: ‘If it cannot, then let’s leave the EU with our heads held high, let’s leave with a NO DEAL and let’s accept the World Trading Agreement as our starting point.

‘Let’s keep our 39 Billion severance pay and let’s start trading with the Commonwealth, with America, Japan, China, India and anyone else that can see that we are a fantastic trading partner.’

The article adds: ‘We must not let the failing Euro super powers bully us – sorry Germany and Mrs Merkel, sorry President Macron and the French franchise.

‘We’ll leave you guys to get on with solving your own problems with the growing and repulsive far right and the destructive left wing yellow vests.

‘It’s now time for Europe to let our Great British democracy sail off and once again be governed by our elected Members of Parliament from Westminster and if we fail, then we fail.’

It is unclear what particular interest the club, who face Havant & Waterlooville in the league this coming weekend, has in influencing MPs on Brexit.

Hertsmere, where they are based, voted narrowly to Leave in 2016 but the club has an average home attendance of only around 700.

Most people on social media were bemused. Football journalist Jon Birchall tweeted: ‘That Boreham Wood post is the most clueless I’ve seen a club on Europe since Wenger went away to Braga with a CB partnership of Squillaci and Djourou.’

Another journalist, Callum Mason, said: ‘Pity the Number 10 staffer who has to go and give the PM the devastating news that she’s lost Boreham Wood FC.’

It follows a rant at the weekend from Cardiff City manager Neil Warnock, who came out as a hard Brexiteer and said ‘to Hell with the rest of the world’.
