Another ministerial aide has quit as Theresa May comes under intense pressure from Brexiteers to change her controversial blueprint for leaving the European Union.
North Cornwall MP Scott Mann resigned as parliamentary private secretary to the Treasury on Monday morning.
He has become the ninth Tory MP to hand in his resignation in just ten days after David Davis and Boris Johnson resigned last week.
Mann took to Twitter to post his resignation later, which he said was tendered ‘with a great deal of sadness’
In his letter he wrote: ‘I fear elements of the Brexit white paper will inevitably put me in direct conflict with the views expressed by a large section of my constituents.
‘I am not prepared to compromise their wishes to deliver a watered-down Brexit.’
The former postman added: ‘The residents of North Cornwall made it very clear that they wish to have control over our fishery, our agricultural policy, our money, our laws and our borders. I will evaluate those principles against the Brexit white paper and ensure that I vote in line with their wishes.’
Mann’s resignation comes as MPs are set to vote on a series of Commons amendments which are intended to send a message to the prime minister on the strength of feeling surrounding her Chequers plan.
