The People’s March for Europe in pictures

Many clad in the blue and yellow of the EU flag and soundtracked by the chants of “b******s to Brexit”, the masses made their way through Trafalgar Square and Whitehall to the rally, where Sir Ed warned them they would have to ‘listen and understand’ Leave voters and wait for a referendum on any deal with the EU.

He said his personal emotions had moved from ‘anger to distress, from fury to despair’ and then to embarrassment at the Brexit negotiations.

He said: “Since the Brexit negotiations begun there’s a third emotion I’ve been feeling – embarrassment.

“Embarrassment at our country’s leaders. Embarrassment for Great Britain.”

But he told the sea of Remainers that the odds were still stacked against them and it was vital that pro-EU forces were seen as a “unifying force”.

‘We need to be a unifying force and that means that we need to listen to the other side,’ he said.

‘We need to understand where they come from and listen in a way that heals the wounds and reunites our country.’

Tory peer Baroness Patience Wheatcroft urged demonstrators to keep campaigning against Brexit.

She said: “We have to stop Brexit. Since we joined the EU we’ve had an unprecedented period of peace and prosperity. It must be right to try and maintain that.

“It’s not undemocratic to try to persuade the electorate to think again about Brexit. That’s democracy at work.”
