Letter: Forget the statues, Peter, Brexit is not a done deal

Last Friday on the Daily Politics I watched a rather smug Peter Bone and Yasmin Alibhai-Brown discussing the mental stresses caused by the Brexit process on Remainers.

The debate was good-natured and none the worse for that. Bone clearly feels the war is won and he can afford to be comfortable with his vision of a post-Brexit future.

Brexit, though likely, is not yet a done deal. And if anyone can snatch defeat from the jaws of victory it must surely be the Three Stooges in charge of the process.

However, should Brexit go ahead, in some form or other, what on earth makes Mr Bone think that I and other disgruntled malcontents will just lie down and take it any more than he and his ilk did when the positions were reversed? And just in case Mr Bone thinks that a few disgruntled 70-year-olds can’t do much damage I am happy to point out that behind us stands a phalanx of freshly politicised young people who will have been dragged out of Europe, against their will, in a constitutionally dodgy and electorally gerrymandered way.

If Brexit Day ever does arrive, I shall raise a glass to the European ideal and to the health of Mr. Bone that he may live long enough to weep over our inevitable return to the European family.

Boneheaded Bone says Brexit is fair and controlled immigration is fair and just and the idea if Britain being racist is ridiculous. This reminds me of the last week of April 1945, when Herr Hitler was planning to invade Russia again just as the Allies were about to win the war.

The delusion and denial are there for all to see.

A desperate Julia Hartley-Brewer appeared on Sunday Politics to reiterate her crazy analogy between the referendum choice and pregnancy: ‘you can’t be a little bit pregnant, you either are, or you aren’t: we’re either leaving the EU or we’re not,’ she argued.

Norway, Iceland, Switzerland, Turkey, are you listening? You’re in the single market or the Customs Union, but not in the EU, right? So, I’m sorry, but in Julia’s world, you’re just like half-pregnant women.

Then the radio host assured us that both the Single Market and the Customs Union were non-stop topics during the referendum campaign: ‘I remember these discussions boring on for hour after hour, day after day, week after week…’

What channel was Julia watching at the time? I watched countless programmes about the referendum and hours of news coverage and my memory is of the single market being barely mentioned and the customs union being mentioned not at all.

Also, having just re-watched Nick Robinson’s influential ‘Big EU Reality Check’ (originally shown on 20 June 2016), I can confirm that he does refer to the single market in one section, but at no time does he mention the Customs Union. So there!
