‘F*** her goddamn Brexit’: Public Enemy’s Chuck D backs Remain and Scottish independence

Chuck D, leader of the rap group Public Enemy, had words of encouragement for Scottish independence campaigners and plenty of scorn for Theresa May at a Glasgow concert.

The group was appearing at Glasglow’s SSE Hydro arena as part of the Gods of Rap tour alongside the Wu-Tang Clan and De La Soul, where Chuck D made his comments.

In mobile phone footage from the concert shot by Twitter user Rory M Stewart – not the Tory MP – the rapper can firstly be seen getting the crowd chanting “fuck bigotry!”

He then added: “I thought you all was going to be independent by the time I got back.

“What you holding on to fucking mommy for?

“Theresa May don’t know what the fuck she’s doing.

“Fuck her goddamn Brexit!” he said to cheers and whistles, adding for good measure: “Fuck goddamn Donald Trump”.

“Let’s all fight the fucking power,” he said, before breaking into “Fight the Power”, replacing the song’s reference to 1989 with 2019.

Chuck D first backed Scottish independence in comments made in 2014, reportedly saying at another Glasgow concert: “That little brother shit is over. Don’t let them take your money no more, Scotland.”

He expanded on his comments that year in an interview with music magazine Clash: “I have friends from Scotland and my friends think that’s the way to go,” he told them. “I was able to get them to give me a good table of pros and cons.

“They’re smart and it’s time … Scotland can have independence.”
