Journalist Robert Peston thinks for the first time since the Brexit vote there is a feeling that we may end up staying in the EU.

Speaking to ITV News political editor Peston said that MPs are now accepting that the only option for Brexit to cancel it – and that this sense of feeling is backed up by other European capitals.

After days of Brexiteers admitting the only deal on the table is not as good as remaining in the EU, Peston now believes ‘there is a reasonable prospect’ we will stay.

He said: ‘Growing numbers of MPs are talking to me about how now the only option is to stay, and they now think the only route to this is through another referendum.

‘Another very important thing that Downing Street said to me today is that she would not be prime minister if there is a referendum.

‘If the will of parliament is that there should be another vote, she would resign.’

Theresa May has repeatedly rejected calls for another referendum or a People’s Vote.

Peston added that he did not believe it was just MPs who were sensing a change, but EU countries were saying it too.

He said: ‘We are facing very big events in the middle of December. Hand on heart I can’t tell you where this will end up.

‘But what I can tell you is for the first time I think there is a reasonable prospect that we will end up staying in the EU.

‘Not just because of what MPs are saying to me, but also when I speak to European capitals that is they now think may happen.’
