The newspaper – which backed Leave during the EU referendum campaign – often runs significant polls on its front page. However, this particular poll was relegated to the bottom of page 20.

It asked almost 13,000 readers online behind their paywall whether or not the UK should hold a ‘second referendum’ on EU membership.

An overwhelming 70% supported the case compared to just 30% that thought the UK would be wrong to have a fresh referendum.

Labour MEP Richard Corbett tweeted: ‘The Sunday Times polled its readers on Brexit, but the result didn’t go the way Murdoch expected, so they published it at the bottom of an inside page.’

Anthony Hilton from the Evening Standard previously explained why Rupert Murdoch was so anti-EU.

He said: ‘I once asked Rupert Murdoch why he was so opposed to the European Union. ‘That’s easy,’ he replied. ‘When I go into Downing Street they do what I say; when I go to Brussels they take no notice”.
