3.3 million Leave voters support People’s Vote, says new poll

3.3 million Leave voters now support a People’s Vote with the option to Remain, a new poll has revealed.

The research, from anti-Brexit campaign group Best for Britain and HOPE not hate, could deal a massive blow to Brexiteers who claim the British public definitively made up their minds in 2016, and adds to growing momentum in recent weeks for people to be given the final say on any deal Theresa May brings back from Brussels.

According to the poll, of the 3.3 million Leave voters, 1.3m voted Labour in last year’s general election, 529,000 Conservative, 933,000 did not vote and the rest opted for other parties.

A nationally representative 4,957 people were asked the question: “Once the Brexit negotiations are complete and the terms of Britain’s exit from the EU have been agreed, do you think the public should or should not have a vote on whether to accept the deal or remain in the EU?”.

Conservative MP and former minister Dr Philip Lee, a champion of Best for Britain, said the findings were “yet more evidence of the democratic necessity of a people’s vote”.

He said: “Millions of people who voted Leave in 2016 now want a final say on Brexit, whether it’s because they have since changed their minds or because they don’t feel they are going to get the Brexit they voted for. We ought to give them that democratic opportunity.

“When deciding on surgery, people need to give their informed consent to proceed once the risks and benefits are clear. Doctors like me seek that consent not just in the consultant’s office weeks beforehand but right up to the door of the operating theatre.

“That is what must now happen with Brexit. There’s no majority in Parliament for any deal. Let’s give everyone, Leave voters, Remain voters and those who did not vote a chance to have a final say and give their informed consent to this process.”

Best for Britain chief Eloise Todd described it as “a groundbreaking moment in the fight for the people to have a final say on Brexit”.

She said: “The people of this country – regardless of which way they voted – have been locked out of the most important decision for our generation. “The majority now recognise democracy didn’t end in 2016. We need to find a way out of the current Brexit hole this government has trapped us in for those businesses who fear for their future and the communities up and down the country who rely on already eroding public services that are being taken over the brink by Brexit. “Enough is enough. We need a people’s vote with the option to stay. Only then will the people of this country be able to compare our current bespoke deal with whatever the government cobbles together.”
