The owner of pub chain JD Wetherspoon is to go on a massive pub crawl to try to convince people everyone will be better off ‘from day one’ with a no-deal Brexit.
Despite the Confederation of Business Industry (CBI) warning of the risks of a no deal, Tim Martin is so sure that the naysayers are wrong he is planning to visit more than 100 of his pubs to spread the word.
Martin, who decided to ‘broaden the horizons’ of his customers post-Brexit by banning various wines and beers from European countries in his pubs, has been speaking out against Theresa May and her ‘appalling deal’ that would see the UK ‘trapped in an undemocratic and financially inefficent system.’
He told the i newspaper: ‘Theresa May is a bit of an oddball. She’s a loser. She was a Remainer, but she hid behind a desk and lost. She lost an election.
‘She wasn’t the best person to get a deal with the EU because she didn’t want Brexit in the first place. It’s hard to get a pro-Brexit message across in the metropolitan areas and in the mainstream media.
‘Even the Daily Mail seems to be against Brexit now.’
In a statement he said: ‘Now that the details of the appalling deal, negotiated by the Downing Street kitchen cabinet have become clear, it is certain the UK will be financially far better off by choosing no deal.
‘The hard mathematics demonstrate beyond doubt that no deal leaves the public and the UK better-off on day one after Brexit.’
Despite Martin arguing that food and drink prices would not rise under a no-deal Brexit, he has warned that he would be putting up prices in his own pubs.
His claims are also at odds with business leaders like the chief executive of the Food and Drink Ferderation who said ‘it is vital that, to protect the interests of shoppers and consumers, the government must deliver a deal with the EU,’
Martin has previously bizarrely claimed that we could all gain a £600 windfall if Britain crashes out of the European Union.
