UKIP’s leader has attacked the high street bakery chain Greggs – after reading a tweet from a parody account that said it was getting a new ‘gender neutral’ name.

Gerard Batten had read a tweet from the parody account ‘Guardian Meme Win’ which said that the chain were renaming and moving towards a ‘gender neutral business model’ after criticism about the name.

It tweeted: ‘Greggs is to rebrand in a move towards a gender neutral business model following criticism that their name sounds too male.’

Batten was infuriated – quickly hitting the quote tweet button to ask ‘when is this madness going to stop?’

He tweeted: ‘Criticism from who? Probably someone who doesn’t buy from Greggs. A cheese roll is a cheese roll!’

He added that ‘almost all the staff in Greggs are female’ and accused the business of operating a ‘biased recruitment policy’.

The tweet was shared by UKIP’s official Twitter account until users pointed out that it was a spoof.

Last month Batten made an extraordinary call for people to boycott the army until Brexit had been achieved.

He claimed that British troops ‘are no longer fighting for Queen and country but under a foreign military command’.
