Well that escalated quickly

We knew it was going to be bad. But even the most pessimistic among us perhaps gave it a bit longer than a few days after the triggering of Article 50 before the prospect of war with an erstwhile European friend was raised.

Such loose talk over Gibraltar from powerful figures in the Brexiteer brigade shows just why we fear so much for this country in the coming negotiations. And it is another reminder of why we have to keep up the fight for common sense and a complete rethink.

Much more to be expected was the latest juvenile tantrum from Nigel Farage, comparing the EU to ‘mafia gangsters’ in a speech to the European Parliament. But if Farage is such a student of mafia politics, he should have taken the advice of Michael Corleone: ‘Never hate your enemies. It affects your judgment.’

Given the government’s unyielding Brexit strategy and the warrior rhetoric of its hyperactive supporters, this is advice that could do with a wider airing. Otherwise, this is going to be a very vicious two years indeed.
