After the House of Lords’ victory this week Britain might not leave the EU on Friday 29 March 2019 after all – ruining the ‘Great British Brexit Calendar’ that Daily Express readers purchased.
On Tuesday evening the House of Lords backed an amendment to the EU Withdrawal Bill to ensure the date is no longer fixed in law as the date the UK leaves the EU.
Peers voted for the amendment by a majority of 78 – with 311 backing it and 233 opposing it. The amendments will now go back to the Commons for MPs to accept or reject.
The Daily Express on Wednesday was scathing about the result, claiming that the Lords had taken a ‘wrecking ball to Brexit’.
However it is possible what has most upset the Express is the damage the vote has caused for the ‘Great British Brexit Calendar’ which was given away free for the first 5,000 readers of the newspaper last year.
According to the editorial the Great British Brexit Calender was a chance to ‘feel part of the historic countdown to Brexit’.
The newspaper wrote: ‘Scratch off the 12 golden stars over the next two years to reveal high quality caricatures of Brexit champions such as Nigel Farage, Boris Johnson, our new blue passport and more.’

It adds: ‘Keep track and feel part of it all with The Great British Brexit Calendar… Scratching off the 12 golden stars is a stellar way to mark our country’s progress towards leaving the EU.’
Last year the company behind the calendar tweeted that it was ‘selling like unregulated hot cakes’ at a price of £9.99. Now the countdown to March 2019 has been left in jepoardy after the peers’ vote.
Still, Brexiteers’ losing out on £9.99 through purchasing this calendar is incomparable to the money Brits would lose if we leave the EU…
