Raab handed Brexit job after Davis quits

After he sensationally quit David Davis warned the UK is giving ‘too much away, too easily’ in the exit talks, but backed May to remain prime minister after his dramatic resignation rocked her premiership.

The outgoing Brexit secretary said the government had gone further than it should have in the negotiations, in a ‘dangerous strategy’.

His late-night resignation plunged May into a fresh leadership crisis and he was swiftly followed out of the Department for Exiting the EU by ally Steve Baker.

But Davis said a leadership challenge would be the ‘wrong thing to do’ and insisted he believed May was a ‘good prime minister’.

Appointing Raab is a shrewd move by May. Many see him as a future leader of the Conservatives and as a prominent Leaver he could stop the rush to topple the prime minister from the Brexit wing of the party.
