The mix-up in a Maxwell documentary review

In Ed Power's review of Ghislaine Maxwell: The Making of a Monster, MANDRAKE was misquoted

If I am embarrassed about working for 12 years on the Daily and Sunday Telegraph – these were the newspapers that went on to help foist Boris Johnson on the nation – it would appear the feeling is mutual.

When I stood down as the Lib Dem parliamentary candidate at the last election, I made the Telegraph’s news pages, but with no acknowledgment, I ever wrote the Mandrake column. It has happened again in Ed Power’s review of the Channel 4 documentary Ghislaine Maxwell: The Making of a Monster.

Power described me as a former colleague of Ghislaine Maxwell’s on The European – not this one, but the one founded by her father, Robert – and quoted me as describing Ghislaine as “a spoiled brat: abrupt, rude”. When I worked at the Telegraph accuracy used to matter so I’d politely point out it wasn’t me who said that in the documentary, but the journalist Anne-Elisabeth Moutet.

Close, but no cigar.
