Truss and Sunak need to reel in more Insta followers

Whoever wins the Conservative leadership is playing catch-up with Boris Johnson on social media

Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak are going to have trouble ever eclipsing Boris Johnson on social media. Their outgoing leader has just notched up two million followers on Instagram – 40 times more than the 43,500 who follow Truss and ten times more than Sunak, who has 200,000 followers. His departure from No. 10 might be good news for the country, but not for the Tory digital team, whose social messages will now be a harder sell.

The outgoing PM is even giving this year‘s Love Island stars a run for their money. He has 600,000 more followers than male runner-up Luca Bish and 100,000 more than male winner Davide Sanclimenti.

Worryingly for Truss and Sunk, they are even farther behind Johnson when it comes to viewing figures for their posts on social media. Johnson secured an audience of three million this week – 1.1 million for his video of a visit to Ukraine, 900,000 for another video of his visit to Ukraine, as well as 700,000 for a video congratulating students on their GCSE results. By contrast, Sunak’s top viewing figure was 100,000 for his leadership launch and Truss maxed out on 16,500 for one of her leadership posts.
