These are the 322 Tory MPs who voted against extending free school meals to children

The government has come under heavy fire after more than 300 Tory MPs voted against extending free meals for hungry kids over the school holidays.

The Tories voted down a Labour motion 322 votes to 261 that would have seen children provided with free school meals during the October half-term and Christmas breaks.

This comes after Manchester United footballer Marcus Rashford called on MPs not to turn “a blind eye” to the plight of vulnerable children.

Rashford, who has ben campaigned to end child poverty and who has successfully lobbied Boris Johnson to extend free meals over the summer break, issued a statement on Twitter.

“Put aside all the noise, the digs, the party politics and let’s focus on the reality,” he wrote.

“A significant number of children are going to bed tonight not only hungry but feeling like they do not matter because of comments that have been made today.

“We must stop stigmatising, judging and pointing fingers. Our views are being clouded by political affiliation. This is not politics, this is humanity.”

But several Tory MPs have come out against the footballer.

Tory backbencher Brendan Clarke-Smith accused him of “virtual signalling” during an address to the Commons.

He told MPs: “Where is the slick PR campaign encouraging absent parents to take some responsibility for their children?

“I do not believe in nationalising children.

“Instead, we need to get back to the idea of taking responsibility, and this means less celebrity virtue-signalling on Twitter by proxy and more action to tackle the real causes of child poverty.”

This follows an admission by Tory minister Paul Scally that “children have been going hungry under a Labour government for years”.

People have been venting their frustrations through Twitter, leading to several trending hashtags, including #ToryScumOut, #FreeSchoolMeals and #MyMP, which has been naming and shaming MPs who voted against the proposals.

The Daily Mirror has also issued a frontpage which describes those MPs as “cruel” and “heartless”.
